If something's not working, we'd like to help.

Which iPhones does it work on?

Any iPhone running iOS 26. On iPhone 15 Pro and newer, everything happens on-device. Older iPhones use OpenAI as a fallback for the formatting step — there's a setup guide for that.

What's the OpenAI API key about?

If your phone doesn't have Apple Intelligence, Recipe Folio needs another way to turn messy OCR text into a structured recipe. It uses OpenAI for that, and you provide your own API key. It costs about a tenth of a cent per recipe. The setup guide walks through it step by step.

Can I edit recipes after scanning?

Yes, everything. Title, ingredients, steps, servings, notes. The scan gives you a starting point — make it yours.

Is my data private?

Yes. Everything lives on your device. No accounts, no cloud, no analytics. If you use the OpenAI fallback, just the recipe text goes to OpenAI — not the photo. Our privacy policy has the full details, but the short version is: we don't collect anything.

Tips for getting better scans?
  • Good lighting makes a real difference.
  • Flatten the page — shadows and curves trip up the text recognition.
  • Use the crop tool to focus on just the recipe.
  • Printed text works best, but clear handwriting usually comes through fine.
Does it work on iPad?

It's built for iPhone. It might run on iPad in compatibility mode, but we haven't optimized it for the bigger screen.

The formatting got something wrong

It happens. The AI does its best, but it's not perfect — especially with unusual layouts or handwriting. You can edit everything on the review screen before saving, or tap into any saved recipe to fix it later.
